Web Pageson Ares

The ares webserver is most commonly visited by going to the address http://www-ra.phys.utas.edu.au, as www-ra is a name server alias for ares.

When visiting pages that have no ~ character directly after the .edu.au/, these pages are being hosted from the directory /var/www/html/ on ares. This directory is owned by root, and is writable only by root.

Any directories appearing below this directory will appear as directories on the web server with the same name. For example, if the directory /var/www/html/think existed on ares, then there would be a http://www-ra.phys.utas.edu.au/think/ site.

Ares runs the Apache web server, and this has been configured to serve the index.html file as the default page whenever a directory is specified without a specific page. This means that if the file /var/www/html/think/index.html existed on ares, then a web browser which navigates to http://www-ra.phys.utas.edu.au/think/ would see the index.html file. If no such file existed, then the web server is configured to show the contents of that directory.

There is also the capacity to host named web pages. There is only one such case at the moment though, for the Grote Reber museum, which can be found at http://www.groterebermuseum.com.au. This site is hosted on ares, and the configuration to make this work can be found in /etc/apache2/sites-available/groterebermuseum on ares.
